so I’m driving across the country tomorrow to pick up a bike, which is based in Filey (hurrah). I was thinking to myself, I wonder if there’s a good chippy over there... there must be! Then I thought “I know who to ask!” You guys and gals... Then I thought, why not start a thread giving the name of the best chippy in the area you come from, so if anyone of us was feeling whan n’ waffey whilst out on the bikes, we have access to a fantastic food resource! So I’ll do my local recommendations and hopefully someone knows Filey! Crakeside Chippy, Greenodd, near Ulverston...basic but good chippy, outside seating only, good car/motorbike parking room... can be the start or finish of some great Cumbrian rides. LA127RT
Graziano's in Girvan, best chippy on the West Coast. Also good one in The Chippie, Hawes. Great roads around there too.
If you want good chips stay away from High Wycombe - I've yet to find a decent chippie in this town. It may cause friction but I have a theory that fish 'n' chips taste better the further north in the UK you go. On holiday in Northumberland once we had superb chips but I cannot remember which village we stopped off in to get them on the way home from a day out... It would be interesting to hear from those of you outside the UK of course, but if any of you suggest McDonald's you may get flamed
If the chippy doesn't use lard/beef dripping to fry them in then I don't go in. I've walked out of such establishments before today and they seem upset when I tell 'em why! Feck 'em, it's my money and I'll spend it where I want! Been a while since I was in Filey and even then we went to Bridlington for fish 'n' chips. Never been there, but the Magpie in Whitby has a great reputation for excellent f & c. Plenty others in Brid' and Scarborough as well.
Coleman’s fish n chips South Shields Tyne & Wear Best in the north east But you’ll have to google it as I’m to thick/lazy to do a link
Best fish and chips i've had in years :- Marco's On The Shore Address: 10 Shore, Arbroath DD11 1PB Best fresh fish and lovely crispy batter.
Undercliffe chippy was the best when I lived in Bradford (still there). One of my current favourites is at Sarisbury near Lower Swanwick on the Hamble - grab your chips then ride down the lane to Universal Marina and sit at the riverside. All Things Fish at Avon Beach, Christchurch is pretty good - with a view of The Needles and the Isle of Wight. No local chippy where I live but we have a mobile chip van which stops at the nearby pub one night a week!
Just to slightly hijack this thread - Avon Beach is next to Mudeford Quay, which is opposite Hengistbury Head (you catch the ferry across or do a long walk around from Christchurch). This sandbank has views over Christchurch Harbour to the west and the sea on the other side and is full of beach huts. These are supposedly the most expensive in England - you can't stay in them all year round, they have no running water or electricity and you have to use a communal shower block. One sold recently for £275,000.00 (see pic below) and it's by no means the best or the biggest! Oh and you have to pay £500.00 rent per year plus a licence fee of £4500.00 annually just in case you were thinking of buying one!
Agree on this - we often end up here on a summers ride out. There is another one we have been to on the Cobble Landing on the seafront - very hit and miss but better location.
Just discovered “Harper’s” at Staxton, just before I got to Filey as I was hungerin’... good parking, excellent beef dripping fried chips and fish, light but crunchy batter! There’s a restaurant and outside seating. Me n the dawg very happy. Fantastic! http://harpersfishandchips.co.uk/our-branches/staxton.html
They have a branch in Wetwang, just down the road from Seaways at Fridaythorpe. It's always busy there (bikes AND cars) which must be a good sign. One day we'll have to stop there and sample the goods. May even try the one in Beverley next time we go. I do like good fish and chips, as my perfectly formed belly will testify!
another vote for grazianos in girvan i always pop in on way back from my static in sands of luce stranraer.
Harpers seem to be buying up a lot of the chippies in York / East Yorkshire - which may / may not be a good thing They are usually OK but are on the expensive side Was in Tynemouth on Saturday and would recommend here: www.longsandsfishkitchen.com Also a few doors down there is Marshall's chippy which has the claim to fame that Jimi Hendrix had a fish supper there once - no supporting photographic evidence though.....
No mate - but there is an expensive fish restaurant in the middle of the beach huts - providing you are willing to take out a second mortgage to fund your meal!
No. But it don't 'arf make 'em TASTY! (Sorry, Jez .... seems that I missed your post - until now. SIGH!).
