Hello all, I've just joined here and thought I'd do an intro post. I worked in engineering, mainly motorsport related nearly all my life but took early retirement a couple of years ago, rented a little workshop (actually a converted shipping container) and now amuse myself restoring and building bikes. Last year I started a project that I've had in mind for a long time...that is to design a bike that has a classic look to it and more importantly feel as well but built using easy to find and cheap components....in this case from a Honda 650. I've made half a dozen now, some sold as kits (there should be pics attached if I've done it right!) Now though I'm planning on something a bit more ambitious...and the reason for joining here...a bike along the lines of a Rob North Trident but using Hinckley parts. I'm quite at home with Meriden Triumphs but have never owned, and only ridden a Hickley triple a couple of times, so if its ok I'll start a thread in the project section and hope to get some advice!!
Hi mate and welcome Wow wow and wow again It's only ok if you move to my neck of the woods so I can help you
Hello Rob and welcome to our little forum. You got skills my man, looking forward to seeing where you end up.
Hello Rob and welcome to the forum Would be interested in any thread that you start on a new project. I likey very much your pictures Your frames do look similar to Rob North frames.
That's an interesting bit of frame building going on there. Have you done them and if so what influenced the style of them and is there a jig I can have a look at? I do like the style which goes well with today's fashion of things oldey world. I notice that the bottom of the rear shocks sit well in from the trailing edge of the swinging arm. Is that for longer smoother travel of today's crap roads? Oh btw, welcome to the forum!!
Thanks for the welcome... I'll be starting a thread on the project fairly soon....once there is a bit of progress, at the moment its no more than a few sketches and some steel tube! I'm currently most of the way through restoring a Triton that when sold will fund the build. Yes the frames are my own design and manufacture though the swingarm is from the donor bike, originally a monoshock. I had intended only to use it whilst I was getting things set up and then make my own at a later point but then found I'd gone too far with the frame design to make that possible so just stuck with it. I modified 4 all with different shock mounting points, as it was easier (and cheaper!) to get spring rates right rather than buying several different shocks. The actual design of the frame is basically similar to quite a few 60's race bikes but with the Trident I think I'll be going for a full cradle design instead....
Welcome Rob, Looking forward to following your project, I think we will learn a bit from you as well as you from us !!
I wouldn't be so sure about that.....the engineering side I can do but my experience with Hinckley Triumphs is basically nil.... I'm aiming for something very similar to the pic below and believe me, I'm going to have a lot of questions! For instance, it has to have spoked wheels to look right and have no idea of if, say, a Tiger hub can be made to fit Trident forks....that kind of thing...
Welcome Rob. Nice projects mate and kudos to you. And a word of advice, if I offer any advice just ignore it cos I know feck all about bikes 'cept how to ride 'em, but so admire those that have your skills and creativity.
