865 efi, 10k miles, just ran up to Ellon and back, 550 miles in 2 days, all good. Thought I could here a bit of a tappity sound from left hand cylinder on way back, when I was stopped at lights or stopping, before engine turned off.

Ran the bike to school and back today, definitely an increased tappety sound, and from LH side.

10k miles - valves ready for adjustment? or thinking it could possibly be a exhaust gasket? had similar in the past, but can't feel anything. Doesn't do it particularly when cold, but definitely when it warms up. Always thought it quite a noisy / tappity valve train, but there is a definite increase in volume of noise.

Anybody had similar? Are exhaust gaskets prone to failure ?

    Any input appreciated.

I dont have any idea except to say, the idea your valve timming may need done seems to fit.

    On a related subject

How long did it take you from Ellon to your home the other day ? If I know that I know how long it should take me to get home from GMU

I changed my exhaust gaskets in January 12000 miles they showed little where and only realy changed them cos I had the new ones there.

I would trust your gut instinct Mr O and treat it as a tappit issue.
Just bring your 12k service forward for peace of mind.

    Yes mate, every 12K.

Incidentally, when you went to Ellon did you go anywhere near Huntly, Turriff or Fyvie? That's my old stamping ground.

    Afraid so.
Bit of a pissing about job as well, having to take the tank off and the secondary air intake gubbins. (If you have it on)
Rocker box cover gasket to replace plus fixing screw seals.
Check all the gaps and record them.
If in spec, you're obviously okay.
If not you have to remove the camshaft to get to the bloody shims.
Take out the shims and check the shim size.
Calculate the new shim size required and buy them at ~ £6 each.
If a few of the valve clearances are out of spec, and your'e clever and lucky you might be able to swap a few shims round minimising the cost.
I haven't done mine yet, but am getting prepared which is why I know the theory.
There are a few YouTube clips available.

Hi Mr Orange, its not something that needs doing to often, they require checking regularly. But mine has had one valve adjustment in 100,000, I took the Cylinder head off did Big bore kit (904cc) and ported head when I put it back together valve's were noisy ! Two out of eight (both exh's) required adjustment, at 94,000 that's not to shabby ! They get noisier and quieter from time to time, try nipping up the exhaust studs might fix the noise ?

Exactly 12 hrs since posting !!!! Funnny how first thing you think about is 'my poor bike is sickly, what can i do ?' so kettle on, brew in hand in garage at 8:00 on a Saturday morning and check exhaust for tightness.

1/4 of a turn on them all !!!!! BLOODYHELL !!!! Started up, wee bit of valve rattle for 5 seconds as per usual and then all quiet.

Really need to get it up to temprature, but got a family wedding today, so will have to wait till early tomorrow morning now. (Worst part, Triumph Glasgow grand opening with the Triumph truck, John Mcphee and Jeremy Mcwilliams are there today:( FFS)

Hopefully that was the problem, but if it is, that's the second time a loose manifold sounds like valve adjustment was needed.

tHANKS FOR INPUT, i'LL REPORT BACK ;)

Hi Mr Orange, sounds like you have it sorted ! Put spanner on it again when it's hot, as the exhaust manifold gaskets are copper ! So they crush and then seal better when HOT !!

    Cheers capt.
