My SE developed a problem today - normally insert key, turn ignition on, both clocks do their sweep and all idiot lights come on. Today, key in, turn on and only the tacho does it's sweep - no speedo and none of the lights in the speedo come on and no milometer/clock. Bike started fine and ran OK with no issues but no speedo! Stopped and turned the wheel to the left and it all lit up and speedo did a sweep, turned wheel straight and it all went out. Tacho and it's idiot lights all work fine. Obviously something is loose - could it be the ignition switch or the connectors where they run into the headlight? Will be on it this evening!
Yeah mate I think you're right sounds like something's loose Hope you find it Don't go straight go left Sorted
If it is like the 2005-2010 Speed Triples the wires can get scraped where they pass under the ignition barrel. If they are rubbed enough the copper gets exposed. Hopefully it is jsut a loose connection though and a quick fix
Well I took the ignition switch apart to look for any obvious signs of a loose connection or corrosion and found nothing. The inside of the switch was immaculate and still liberally coated in factory grease. I carefully kept the springs in place and cleaned the contacts on the reverse of the plate but all seems fine here. Next I removed the headlight and checked the connector block the wires from the ignition switch run into. Again all clean and full of factory grease so no obvious problem. Wiggled the wire from the ignition switch and the speedo lit up and then went off and then came on etc. Re-packed the wires in the headlamp shell and pulled the ignition wire further out so that it has slightly more travel and it all seems to work now.
You may have a broken wire in the wiring from the ignition block, most probably the power supply side, but an earth wire fault isn't off the list of possible causes. Cheers capt.
Update on this thread. I rode around for a while with this problem at the back of my mind and then as suspected, it manifested itself again. Switch on - the rev counter sweeps around but nothing from the speedo again. Turn bars fully left and it all comes to life the bike starts but move the bars straight and the speedo, clock and warning lights all go off. Did some Triumph RAT research and it appears that the culprit could well be the infamous "4 into 1" crimped connection. Yes, Triumph in their wisdom bare the ends of 4 wires and the single wire they are to connect to and then crimp them together with a small brass connector. Apparently there are five such connections within the loom and they are likely at some point to come adrift. So, stripped back the insulation on that part of the loom which runs down the LH side of the bike from the headlamp to just before it goes under the tank. Found the culprit with the four wires from the speedo going into one and ... it was perfectly connected. The next crimped connector includes the single blue CANBUS wire, which was also fine, but this can apparently break loose and cause the bike not to start at all. Stripped the loom back a bit more then gave up as there was no obvious break. A morning with the bike at Just Motorcycles in Basingstoke solved the problem. A broken earth wire back towards the headlamp - took the electrician 2 hours to find it but all is well now!
I was right A broken wire, just not in ignition loom, power and earth's out of the headlight navel/loom. Broken wire's always take long long time to find ! Almost impossible to locate the break point in heavy commercial vehicles ! As you are search wire's in bundles of up to 20 plus wire's running 30ft and more. Bikes should be easy Nah Way, there's more wires jammed into little or no space
